Architects and interior designers need to take into account two goals when undertaking a decoration project for a restaurant, bar or cafeteria: that customers will perceive a welcoming atmosphere and that the professionals working in the establishment don't have to worry about the lighting appliances. To achieve these goals they combine the aces of leisure space lighting: low maintenance lights, low consumption bulbs, the warmth of the light and the aesthetic value of the appliances which go to make up the installation.
Let's have a look at these four points.
Maintenance - the installation of lights made under strict quality control procedures is always a good starting point. ROVASI's guarantee is not only applicable to materials and parts but also to designs and the manufacturing and assembly processes. As a result our customers know that they can cut maintenance costs to a minimum right from the start of the production process to when the light is finally delivered.
Consumption - premises used for leisure purposes are exceptional in that they have their lights on for very long periods of time. Hence it is crucial in the medium- and long-term to analyse energy consumption and only install lights which deliver the best energy performance, evaluating the types of bulbs, power ratings, types of reflectors and so on.
Ambience - one of the factors which has the greatest impact on public perception of an ambience is its chromatic reproduction. Before choosing one type of bulb over another, you have to evaluate how this decision will affect daily activity in the premises. Compact fluorescent bulbs, for example, provide good chromatic reproduction, although incandescent and halogen ones are even better. Metal halide bulbs are in a second category followed by mercury ones with sodium bulbs bringing up the rear.
Style - a penumbra is not desirable, but it should never under any circumstances be replaced by glare. Creating ambience by balancing lighting levels and picking out specific points is indispensable in creating a good atmosphere in the premises. With ROVASI's lighting calculation program and a combination of W-lights, Tracks (for sideways emission) or Orion with Downlights, extremely attractive outcomes can be achieved.
In forthcoming issues of this newsletter we'll be looking at emergency lighting, which deserves more detailed treatment as it is compulsory in public premises.
