AND THE LIGHT SHOWS AIGÜES TORTES
The place where ROVASI has its head office, Catalonia, is famous the world over for its beaches. Hotel facilities which are visited by thousands of tourists have taken advantage of the fine landscapes and benign climate of the Costa Daurada and the Costa Brava. Nevertheless, even though Catalonia's beaches are much better known internationally, they're not the only sites of interest for travellers.

For example, in the north of the province of Lleida, in the Central Pyrenees, you'll find the Parc Nacional d'Aigües Tortes i Estany de Sant Maurici (Aigües Tortes National Park and Sant Maurici Lake), one of the most beautiful and ecologically-rich places in the area.

It covers more than 40,000 ha in total (14,119 of which are actually part of the park and protected against any external impact) and is home to countless U-shaped valleys produced by glaciers which slid down the mountains in the Quaternary era. The sediments they deposited in some of the area's 200 lakes were the genesis of the fact that today water flows abundantly and boisterously along small watercourses, torrents and creeks as the "aigües tortes" (twisted waters) after which the Park is named.

Any time of year is a good one to visit Aigües Tortes - Estany de Sant Maurici. In the autumn and winter snow is the area's main feature and enables visitors to enjoy an unstained white mantel on its fir trees. We can guarantee that a morning spent hiking while listening to the songs of the innumerable species which are able to live in complete freedom thanks to the protection afforded them by the National Park really is an effective stress therapy!

If you'd like to visit the Park, we suggest you find out more about the Park's regulations from the Casa del Parc de Boí or the Casa del Parc d'Espot information offices in their respective Pyrenean villages. Walkers should ensure they enjoy the rural beauty of the place without leaving any traces of their having been there. It is also a good idea to go with other people and to put off your outing if weather conditions are poor.

PROJECT
LIGHTING LEISURE SPACES
I - restaurants, bars and cafeterias

Architects and interior designers need to take into account two goals when undertaking a decoration project for a restaurant, bar or cafeteria: that customers will perceive a welcoming atmosphere and that the professionals working in the establishment don't have to worry about the lighting appliances. To achieve these goals they combine the aces of leisure space lighting: low maintenance lights, low consumption bulbs, the warmth of the light and the aesthetic value of the appliances which go to make up the installation.

Let's have a look at these four points.

Maintenance - the installation of lights made under strict quality control procedures is always a good starting point. ROVASI's guarantee is not only applicable to materials and parts but also to designs and the manufacturing and assembly processes. As a result our customers know that they can cut maintenance costs to a minimum right from the start of the production process to when the light is finally delivered.

Consumption - premises used for leisure purposes are exceptional in that they have their lights on for very long periods of time. Hence it is crucial in the medium- and long-term to analyse energy consumption and only install lights which deliver the best energy performance, evaluating the types of bulbs, power ratings, types of reflectors and so on.

Ambience - one of the factors which has the greatest impact on public perception of an ambience is its chromatic reproduction. Before choosing one type of bulb over another, you have to evaluate how this decision will affect daily activity in the premises. Compact fluorescent bulbs, for example, provide good chromatic reproduction, although incandescent and halogen ones are even better. Metal halide bulbs are in a second category followed by mercury ones with sodium bulbs bringing up the rear.

Style - a penumbra is not desirable, but it should never under any circumstances be replaced by glare. Creating ambience by balancing lighting levels and picking out specific points is indispensable in creating a good atmosphere in the premises. With ROVASI's lighting calculation program and a combination of W-lights, Tracks (for sideways emission) or Orion with Downlights, extremely attractive outcomes can be achieved.

In forthcoming issues of this newsletter we'll be looking at emergency lighting, which deserves more detailed treatment as it is compulsory in public premises.
