AND LIGHT SHOWS US... DON QUIXOTE AND BARCELONA
"In a town in La Mancha, whose name I do not wish to recall..." Although it is true that most of the adventures of the valiant itinerant knight Don Quixote de la Mancha take place in the fields of Castille, on the most extensive plains in the Iberian Peninsula, Barcelona also appears in Miquel de Cervantes' famous novel as a key setting. The knight's travels finish in Barcelona, where Don Quixote discovers the sea:
"Don Quixote and Sancho looked around everywhere: they saw the sea, which up until then they had not seen [...]."
On the four hundredth anniversary of the publication of Don Quixote and coinciding with Books and Reading Year, ROVASI would like to invite you to find out about the links between this supreme work of world literature and the city in which we have our head office.
A tour around Don Quixote's Barcelona
If you like going for a walk and learning at the same time, you could sign up for the tours which the city's libraries are organising from 19 March to 29 November. Accompanied by a guide, you'll be able to see the streets and nooks in Barcelona which Don Quixote and his inseparable squire Sancho Panza visited. A great activity for families and kids.
Exhibitions
You can also go on an exciting trip into the past by visiting the El Quixot i Barcelona exhibition in the History Museum in the Gothic quarter. The exhibition shows what city life was like in the 17th century. Runs from 16 March to 9 October.
How did Picasso, Dalí, Antonio Saura, Doré and Daumier see the figure of Don Quixote? The impact of Cervantes's masterpiece on art is the basis for Quixots, another fascinating exhibition which can be visited at La Pedrera, Gaudí's emblematic building, from 7 March to 12 June.
But if what interests you is Don Quixote's relationship with the sea, then check out the "Cervantes and Barcelona. Don Quixote, Cervantes and the world of galleys" exhibition featuring period seafaring objects, maps and drawings. From April onwards in Barcelona's Maritime Museum.
